Welcome to our Glasgow Youth Council quaterly update for October – December 2019, our members got up to a lot this quarter both in GYC.
First Executive committee (Exec) meeting – October 2019
Our brand knew Exec – who were elected at the AGM last month - met for the first time at the start of this month to discuss their plans for the upcoming year.
Deputies – October 2019
At the October full council meeting (FCM) we voted and confirmed the new 2019/20 deputies who are as follows:
Officer to the Executive Committee – Kerry-Lee Dalgleish
Officer to the Vice Chair – Kieran O’Shea
Executive Committee Clerk – Ellie Craig
Deputy for Events and Community Engagement – Catherine Mackie
Deputy Policy Officer - Marissa Roxburgh
Deputy Campaigns Officer – Sophie Reid
Deputy for Social Media and Design – Hayden Atkin
After being confirmed the deputies met to discuss how to improve the GYC and how best to work with their respective exec member.
Also at the October FCM, The youth council participated in a discussion with the World Health Organisation asking us what issues we were passionate about, We had lots of great ideas from our members and are so grateful to be a part of this discussion
At both the October and November FCM, we reviewed old GYC policy to see if we believe it should continue to be Policy or fall, for a list of the policy we went through check the minutes for these meeting when added
Announcement of Working groups
Exec members Emily Harle and Ross McArthur announced a new working group, the policy enactment group, where they will look at Policy motions, pick the best ones that pass and create mini campaigns on them.
Another working group was announced by C-Jay Quigley and Jenny Newton, an Outreach Group, where a group of members will meet once every 3 months to put together possible contacts and methods to recruit new members.
These groups should be launched early 2020.
Announcement of Strasbourg
At the November FCM, the chair Danny Raja announced that 20 members of the Glasgow Youth Council would be going on a four day trip to the European Parliament in Strasbourg in May 2020 to participate in the European Youth Event.
Also at this FCM, We had a visitor from the Sandyford clinic who spoke to the membership about the sexual health clinic and how best to get the word out to young people about them, we also learned about different kinds of contraception and safe sex.
General Election Count
6 members of the GYC -as part of the Electoral Commission- attended the Glasgow general election count, where they were able to witness democracy in action, learn more about uk politics and had the chance to speak to politicians from all different parties and even appeared in the back ground of a BBC Interview.
As is tradition in GYC, we had our annual social event, to thank all the membership for their hard work, we played a few games of bowling before enjoying a nice meal at Nandos, it was a nice way to cap off an amazing GYC year.
